Here, we share specifics on five, popular apps that could prove particularly useful to nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers working locum tenens.

  • UpToDate. When surveyed, 98 percent of the healthcare practitioners who subscribe to this site indicated they would recommend it to a colleague. Promoted as the “premier evidence-based clinical decision support resource,” it is recurrently updated to help clinicians provide better patient care. You can even earn continuing education credit while using it.
  • Nursing Central. Lauded as the primary source of disease, drug, and test information for nurses, this app also includes a leading dictionary, literature searching, and study system. Search MEDLINE or stay current with nursing journals by having tables of contents delivered directly to your iPhone or Android.
  • Happtique. This platform can help you discover and distribute a range of helpful apps to your patients. It also allows you to easily review patient-generated health data from apps you have recommended to drive more informed decision making.
  • DocMeIn. A free web-based service, DocMeIn lets you schedule appointments online. Patients receive reminders per your specifications (i.e., any combination of email, phone, or text), reducing “no shows” and maximizing continued care.
  • Skyscape. Download the free Skyscape reader for your mobile device to access hundreds of resources. You can browse by profession or by category; there are 400-plus mobile medical references sourced from leading medical publishers, content providers, and authors.
