Doctors reviewing medical charts, verticalThe ever-evolving mobile market serves as both an opportunity and a challenge for the medical industry. Many providers look for ways to integrate mobile technologies into their practice settings and patient-care models, while, among other challenges, maintaining HIPAA compliance and keeping up with current and impending practice mandates resulting from the Affordable Care Act.

How is the medical industry faring? An infographic, shared by HIT Consultant, featured below, analyzes the results of HIMSS Analytics’ third annual Mobile Survey. Nearly 300 respondents from more than 650 U.S. hospitals participated in the study. The survey was designed to examine the use of mobile devices in provider patient care improvement initiatives. Its results reveal progress made and hurdles faced by providers across the country.

Key findings, also reported by HIT Consultant, include:

  • 59 percent of respondents have a mobile technology plan
  • 95 percent use at least one security tool for data saved on a mobile device
  • Mobile devices are most often used for accessing patient information
  • Among all medical practice settings, mobile technologies are most often used for pharmacy management
  • Lack of funding is the top barrier
