What it’s like working locum tenens with Weatherby

Recognized for excellence in healthcare staffing

Weatherby Healthcare regularly surveys physicians about their experience working with our teams. One of the key metrics we use is our net promoter score (NPS), which measures how likely physicians are to recommend our staffing services to colleagues. In staffing and recruiting, scores above 50 are considered excellent. Scores above 70 are considered world class.

Our NPS score is 81. In fact, 86% of physicians rated their experience with Weatherby as 9 or 10 out of 10. For ten years, Weatherby Healthcare has earned ClearlyRated’s Best of Staffing award, placing us among the top staffing firms nationally.

I chose to work with Weatherby through a referral of a colleague... he gave all five stars and a great review.

— Dr. Kostolias, OB-GYN

Weatherby struck me differently because they are so intentional about making sure that I was what [the facility] wanted. They have only offered quality facilities to me. Honesty and transparency is what I've experienced.

— Dr. Davis, OB-GYN

How Weatherby handles pay

Physicians deserve clarity about compensation before they commit to an assignment. We approach locums with a long-term mindset, helping physicians build reliable, ongoing opportunities that support consistent income, schedule flexibility, and career sustainability over time.

How locum tenens rates are determined

Compensation may vary based on:

  • Specialty and required procedures

  • Assignment location

  • Shift structure and patient volume

  • Market demand

  • Facility urgency and budget

Our recruiters benchmark rates against current market trends to advocate for competitive physician compensation. You choose which opportunities to accept. If an assignment does not align with your expectations, you are never obligated to accept the role.

Your assignment confirmation outlines:

  • Hourly rate

  • Assignment dates

  • Shift details

  • Worksite information

  • Call requirements

Rates are negotiated before assignment acceptance and documented within your assignment confirmation. When you create a MyWeatherby account, you'll have everything you need for a smooth assignment right at your fingertips.

When it comes to professionalism and access to multiple jobs, Weatherby stands out. Locums can be complex with credentialing, travel, scheduling, and if you go with somebody who doesn't have the infrastructure, you can get into issues.

— Dr. Barrett, general surgeon

The thing I like about Weatherby is the attentiveness and the responsiveness. That confidence, that reliability is very important, more important potentially than actual numbers or actual rates.

— Dr. Rifkin, urologist

What happens if a locum assignment is canceled

Because locum tenens work is temporary, occasionally assignment changes occur. While cancellations are uncommon, Weatherby believes physicians should be prepared and informed about the process.

Facilities may cancel assignments because:

  • A permanent hire starts earlier than expected

  • Patient volume changes

  • Budgets shift

  • Staffing priorities evolve

Physicians may also need to cancel assignments because of:

  • Illness

  • Family emergencies

  • Patient-safety concerns

  • Scheduling conflicts

What protections are included in a contract

Assignment agreements outline notice requirements and cancellation terms for both parties. Thirty-day notice periods are most common, although timelines may vary. Contracts may also include compensation protection for confirmed shifts canceled within the notice window, sometimes referred to as “kill fees.”

Our clauses for illness, emergencies, and patient-safety concerns are also addressed in assignment agreements, giving physicians an avenue to cancel if necessary.

How Weatherby supports physicians

If a facility cancels an assignment, our teams work proactively to identify replacement opportunities as soon as possible. Because Weatherby partners with healthcare organizations nationwide, we often have access to additional opportunities that may help reduce scheduling disruptions. Our goal is to help physicians maintain continuity of work and minimize unnecessary stress.

FAQ

No. Your contract spells out your exact compensation, and that's what you get paid. Full stop. Weatherby doesn't reduce your rate after you've accepted. If you ever feel like your rate wasn't represented accurately, please reach out to your recruiter to amend the situation. That's not how we operate, and we would want to correct any errors.

Weatherby’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) is 81% and puts is in the top of all staffing firms in the country. Our NPS score is calculated by asking physicians who work with us if they would recommend us to a colleague. A score of 81 means the overwhelming majority of physicians say yes—in fact 86% percent ranked their experience with Weatherby as 9 or 10 out of 10. That number is measured and verified by ClearlyRated and updated annually, not a number we made up or measured ourselves. It matters because the majority of physicians who work with Weatherby have a positive experience.

While unusual, cancellations can happen, usually for clinical or facility reasons beyond our control. When they do occur, your consultant reaches out to you right away and starts working on a replacement assignment immediately. Your consultant will also make sure you are paid any kill fee due under the terms of your contract. Make sure to review cancellation terms before you accept an assignment so you know what to expect in advance.

Yes. Ten years Weatherby has won the Best of Staffing Award, landing us in the top staffing firms nationally. The award is based entirely on verified ratings from the physicians and clients we work with. No self-reporting, no industry panels. Just physician feedback, independently verified.

You're matched with a consultant who knows your specialty and the markets you're interested in, not a generalist, and not a call center. Weatherby has more than 600 consultants, many with 25+ years of experience in locum tenens. Your consultant stays with you throughout your time with us. If you're not getting the responsiveness you expect, you can request a different consultant. No awkward conversation needed, just ask.

In addition to your pay rate, Weatherby includes some notable additions to your compensation package. First, housing and travel, when necessary, are handled by a dedicated travel concierge team that takes the burden of dealing with travel off your hands. More importantly, Weatherby provides malpractice insurance with tail coverage included on day one of your assignment in all 50 states. You won’t get billed for tail coverage after an assignment ends. A full breakdown of how locum tenens compensation works can be found in our Compensation Guide. It’s worth a read before your first assignment.

If a Weatherby consultant reached out unexpectedly, your information likely appeared in a professional database or came through a referral. We get that unsolicited calls can be frustrating. If you don't want to hear from us, just say so. Your consultant will remove you from outreach. We're not here to chase down physicians who aren't interested. If you are open to learning more, we're happy to talk.
